Study Says Porn Too Widespread to Be Harmful

MONTREAL — A new research study conducted among college-aged men has found that there is a seemingly low correlation between pornography consumption and pathological behavior because porn is so widely consumed.

The study, out of the University of Montreal, sought “to observe the impact of pornography on the sexuality of men, and how it shapes their perception of men and women,” professor Simon Louis Lajeunesse told CNET.com.

Lajeunesse has interviewed 20 heterosexual male university students who all are consumers of pornography. His research shows that 90 percent of porn is consumed online and 10 percent through brick-and-mortar retail stores. On average, single men watch porn about three times a week for about 40 minutes, while men who are in relationships watch about 1.7 times a week for about 20 minutes, according to the study.

"Pornography hasn't changed their perception of women or their relationship, which they all want as harmonious and fulfilling as possible," Lajeunesse said. "Those who could not live out their fantasy in real life with their partner simply set aside the fantasy. The fantasy is broken in the real world and men don't want their partner to look like a porn star."

Of course, while the study only includes a small sample size of 20 straight men, the preliminary results are encouraging to those who seek to correlate consuming porn to deviant or misogynistic behavior.
